Future and elsi
Because we have to think about the future and social issues
Future
Even though in this project the target object for the structure is mostly regarding virus, there are a lot of potential usage of the structure. One of them includes waste management, recently in Japan there has been a nuclear meltdown and thus radioactive particles were released to the environment. If our structure can somehow be strengthened, it has the potential to clean these wastes. Also, not limited to waste, this structure might also be effective in drug delivery with the modification of release, capture and sensory mechanisms.
ELSI (ethical, legal, and social implications)
As with every technological innovation, there are bound to be issues regarding ethical, legal, and social implications that should be addressed.
During the process of creating the DNA structures, buffers and different kinds of reagents were used. Some of the buffer solutions might have leaked into the drainage system, these wastes might potentially be harmful to the environment. Not only that, the structure contains several modifications such as biotin, even though biotin has been proven to not be a hazard, future modifications (if any) might have dangers and thus waste management should be considered.
In the process of making, the folding of DNA is not always perfect 100% of the time, this faulty in DNA folding might give rise to completely different structures. These faulty structures, might possibly have unexpected features that end up being harmful to other objects in the environment.
